The flute and its smaller cousin the piccolo produce some of the highest tones of any instrument. Composers often use the instrument to represent the sound of birds or to create simple, memorable melodies.
Unlike other woodwinds, the flute—which is often made of a combination of silver and nickel—does not have reed. Instead, sound is produced by blowing over a hole near the end of the tube that compromises the instrument. Individual notes are formed by pressing keys to close and open holes.
The piccolo is about half the size of the typical flute, and is the highest pitched instrument in the band or orchestra.
