Band : Low Brass

The low brass category is one of the most important for any band or orchestra. The baritone or euphonium and the tuba often provide the deep bass voice that helps keep a steady beat – vital for any ensemble.

The euphonium, more commonly known as a baritone, is usually used for harmony, but is also excellent as a solo instrument. It has the same pitch as a trombone, but is played like a trumpet, with valves that are pushed to form notes.

The other segment of low brass instruments, the tuba (or sousaphone), is one of the largest in the band or orchestra, and has the lowest pitch of all instruments. These horns provide deep, booming tones that are frequently utilized by composers to keep the beat for the rest of the band. As a result, they are two of the most important instruments. The tuba is a concert instrument; it is played sitting down with the instrument resting in your lap. The sousaphone, on the other hand, is usually reserved for marching bands, and is worn around the body, similar to a harness.
