Band : Oboe/Bassoon

The oboe and the bassoon represent two extremes of the same concept: a double-reeded woodwind with a strong voice.

The oboe is shaped similarly to a clarinet: a length of wood tubing with keys that cover holes and form individual notes. Unlike the clarinet, however, the sound of the oboe is made with two reeds, not one. This makes it a difficult instrument to play, but the effort is most rewarding: the oboe offers high, clear sounds that soar over the voices of other instruments.

In the same vein as the oboe, the bassoon is also a double-reeded instrument. It is essentially a longer version of the oboe. Its tube is actually folded back over itself. In fact, if a bassoon was unfolded it would be almost nine feet long. The bassoon is capable of producing the same soaring voice of the oboe, but its extreme length renders this voice into the bass register, providing low tones that provide the heart of any ensemble.
