Orchestra : The Importance of Maintaining Your Instrument
Some instruments are tanks and others aren’t. With the proper knowledge, students can save their parents money on repairs, experience less frustration and more success, and produce a higher quality of sound.
Why keep instruments in good repair?
With proper care and regular maintenance, an instrument will maintain its value for years to come. Instruments should be serviced regularly every 18 months (at the maximum, 12 months is preferred) to keep them in playing condition and prevent small problems from snowballing into large, expensive repairs.
Follow these simple tips to extend the life of your instrument:
Review your instrument each time you play for changes in its appearance, such changes may indicate a repair needs to be done
Avoid extremes in temperature and humidity and allow the instrument to warm up to room temperatures before you play
Have small repairs done often, neglected repairs become expensive large repairs
Lubricate instruments with cork grease, oil, cream, or rosin where appropriate
