A larger version of the violin, the viola is the alto voice of the orchestra. Like the violin, it is held under the chin and played with a bow. It is commonly tuned a fifth below the violin and an octave above the cello, making it a perfect middle ground between the two instruments.
The larger tone chamber of the viola can produce somber, mellow, and moody tones. This depth and richness is vital for a full sounding ensemble or string quartet.
